"The Democratic Coalition in name alone was destroyed by one thing – by human ambition. By the human ambition of a single person. By thirst for power, divergence of values, priority of personal interests over national interests."

The coalition agreement and coalition concords are destroyed, economic reforms are not conducted, election-aimed calculations transformed into lust for presidential absolute power that yielded the highest inflation rates in Europe and deterioration of social standards – wages, retirement payments and many other social programs.

Block of Yulia Tymoshenko and Ukraine’s Parliamentary government have become hostage to the President. Yushchenko is ready to sacrifice everything: language, security, European integration in order to cling on to power.

Last night Viktor Yushchenko sacrificed the idealism and faith of those that supported his election and the Orange revolution. His party Our Ukraine have betrayed that revolution and Ukraine’s quest for democratic values. They were the party that caused the collapse of the Orange coalition in 2006. Last night Vicktor Yushchenko hammered in the last nail in the Orange revolution’s coffin and democracy in Ukraine.

Victor Yushchenko would not listen or share the belief of a majority of Ukrainians who want honest and democratic government. He has clung on to the past and struggled to hold on to soviet presidential authoritarian rule as opposed to embracing European values and a system of Parliamentary democracy in line with other European States. He has put his own personal interests and lust for power ahead of the long term democratic interests of Ukraine

Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko has given party leaders more time to find a way out of the ongoing political crisis. The country has been caught up in political deadlock since the ruling coalition between Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko's bloc and the pro-presidential party collapsed last month.

So far no new coalition has been formed, as the rival sides continue to accuse each other of causing the stalemate.

President Yushchenko announced consultations with political party leaders at 8am. The dissolution of the Rada was the one and only topic on the agenda.

Analysts thought the talks could’ve gone either way, but after just an hour of negotiations, the talking was over. And, according to the presidential administration, all agreed that another early election was inevitable.

But Nikolay Tomenko, a deputy from the Bloc of Yulia Timoshenko, wasn’t so sure

“Some say that we all happily agree with the president about early voting. I don’t know what the other parties think, but BYuT has been on the side of the majority of Ukraine’s population. We think that another early election is an absolutely anti-national step,” he said.

The reaction from the Prime Minister’s corner is not surprising. While the Party of Regions and the Communists seem more or less calm about a possible bail out – probably because they’re unlikely to lose their seats – the stakes are high for the Iron Lady of Ukrainian politics.

Ahead of the presidential campaign, which kicks off in less than a year, remaining at the helm is crucial for Timoshenko’s political future.

But experts believe this is something Yushchenko sees as a threat. And for some, this is what the crisis is really about.

Political analyst Mikhail Pogribinskiy said: “They’re fighting for the same electorate, but Timoshenko’s rating is 25 per cent and Yushchenko’s is barely 5 per cent. So he has to get rid of her and the only way to do so is through another snap ballot. It’s absolutely impossible that Timoshenko would again gain a majority with any other party and be re-elected as prime-minister.”

Observers say the only way Timoshenko can regain the initiative is to create an unlikely alliance with her political opponents – the Party of Regions. But both have already given clear indications that such a broad coalition would not happen.

So what appears to be another blame-game between the prime minister and the president could well be the only tactic left for Timoshenko.

Last year, political experts doubted until the very last minute that the Rada would be dispersed. But this time, nobody believes that any coalition will be formed. And the only question which remains for Ukrainian politics is: how long is left for the Rada.

The Ukrainian constitution says an early election must be held within two months following the decree to dissolve parliament. Some predict the dissolution of the Rada will happen this week. That’s because in order to ensure a higher turnout of voters, the fourth ballot in as many years must be held before Christmas and the New Year.

Ukraine is in the grip of a fresh crisis, with another face-off between former Orange Bloc allies President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko underway. The president has accused Tymoshenko of ‘high treason’ and ‘working with Russia’ as she refused to condemn South Ossetia’s and Abkhazia’s declarations of independence.

The ruling coalition government collapsed after the ‘Our Ukraine Self-Defence Block’ party led by President Viktor Yushchenko pulled out of the coalition on Wednesday.

The president is now threatening to dissolve parliament and call a snap election. The president’s party and the Yulia Tymoshenko bloc have been in an uncomfortable union since the coalition was formed in 2007, and the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict became the latest bone of contention.

Opposition leader Viktor Yanukovich has backed Russia’s actions in South Ossetia. The president has accused Yulia Tymoshenko of also supporting Russia as she has not spoken out against South Ossetian and Abkhazian independence.

The president called the latest developments a “political and constitutional coup d’etat”. He announced on Wednesday that once the split comes into effect he will allow lawmakers 30 days to form a new coalition. If a coalition is not formed, he will use his decree powers to dissolve the parliament and call elections.
