Yushchenko seeking to destabilise elections in order to cling on to power

Ukraine’s second most popular presidential candidate, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, suspects that President Viktor Yushchenko -who is running for a second term- of conspiring to disrupt the presidential election scheduled for January 17, 2010. Yushchenko, to whom opinion polls give no more than 2-4 percent of popular support, has appealed to the constitutional court against several provisions in a new election law.

Obama’s smart strategic move on target

U.S. President Barack Obama’s decision to scrap a planned anti-missile system in Poland and the Czech Republic on Sept. 17 was a bold gesture that may help improve relations between the United States and Russia. It will also have positive repercussions for European peace and security. Many Western European governments, which had been cool from the outset to a unilateral U.S. project they regarded as gratuitiously provocative towards Russia, greeted the American decision with relief.
