Russia’s recognition of Abkhazia and South Osettia has sparked jubilation in Georgia’s two breakaway republics. Celebratory gunfire has been going on for hours in the South Ossetian capital Tskhinval, along with blasts of loud, cheerful music. Similar scenes have occurred in Sukhum, the capital of Abkhazia.

The celebrations in both capitals are expected to last for at least a few more days.

The breakaway republics are now looking to an independent future following Russia’s recognition of their status.
